June

Summer is just around the corner!  Whether you’re planning exciting adventures, relaxing with friends, or trying something new, summer is a time to have fun—but it’s also important to make sure you’re staying safe and making smart decisions.
Here are a few ways to enjoy your summer while protecting your health and well-being:

  • Stay in control: Summer might bring new experiences and social events but remember that drinking alcohol or using other substances can cloud your judgment and make it harder to stay safe. Choose to stay in control so you can make the best decisions for yourself. (Source: SAMHSA, “Underage Drinking: Myths vs. Facts” and CDC, “Alcohol and Public Health”)

  • Be aware of risky situations: Alcohol can reduce your ability to sense danger and react quickly. Whether you’re at a pool party, the beach, or just hanging out with friends, it’s important to stay alert and be aware of your surroundings. (Source: NIAAA, “Facts About Alcohol” and CDC, “Underage Drinking: Risk Factors and Consequences”)

  • Look out for your friends: If you see someone making unsafe choices, step up and help them make better decisions. Being a good friend means encouraging those around you to stay safe, too. (Source: CDC, “Preventing Underage Drinking” and SAMHSA, “The Power of Peer Prevention”)

Summer is the perfect time to enjoy life, try new things, and relax—but none of that should come at the cost of your health or safety. By making good choices, you’re not only protecting your future but also ensuring that this summer will be full of great memories you won’t forget.
Have a fun, safe, and smart summer!

(Source: SAMHSA, “Underage Drinking: Myths vs. Facts” and CDC, “Alcohol and Public Health”)

(Source: NIAAA, “Facts About Alcohol” and CDC, “Underage Drinking: Risk Factors and Consequences”)

(Source: CDC, “Preventing Underage Drinking” and SAMHSA, “The Power of Peer Prevention”)

May

Students will be celebrating National Prevention Week by having themed dress up days, trivia at lunch, digital shareables created by SAMHSA, a slogan contest, and prevention chalk art!

Happy May! This month, we’re excited to celebrate National Prevention Week (May 12th-18th), a time dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of making healthy choices and avoiding risky behaviors, including underage drinking. May is also mental health awareness month. It’s important to recognize our mental health and take care of ourselves. Did you know alcohol use can worsen mental health? Alcohol use impacts your brain chemistry and your judgement which can have negative impacts on your mental health.

National Prevention Week is all about taking action to protect your future by making smart decisions today. Whether it’s avoiding alcohol or supporting friends who are making healthy choices, you have the power to create positive change in your life and community.

Here’s why prevention matters:

  • Your choices shape your future: The decisions you make today can impact your health, success, and happiness in the long run. Choosing to avoid alcohol and other harmful substances helps you stay focused, energized, and on the path to achieving your goals. (Source: NIAAA, “Underage Drinking: A Major Public Health Challenge”)

  • Stay in control: Alcohol can cloud your judgment and slow down your brain’s development. By choosing not to drink, you’re keeping your mind sharp and making sure you’re in control of your actions, decisions, and emotions. (Source: NIAAA, “The Effects of Alcohol on the Adolescent Brain”)

  • Be a leader: National Prevention Week is the perfect time to be a role model. Encourage your friends to make smart choices, stay safe, and protect their futures too. (Source: SAMHSA, “Preventing Underage Drinking” and NIDA, “Peer Influence on Risky Behavior”)

During this month, let’s take a moment to reflect on how we can all play a role in creating a healthier environment. Whether it's learning more about the effects of alcohol, encouraging a friend of family member to get support for their emotions, your actions can make a big difference.

This May, let’s celebrate National Prevention Week & Mental Health Awareness month by committing to healthy choices that protect our bodies, minds, and futures. You’ve got bright things ahead, and prevention is key to making sure you reach your goals!

¡Feliz mayo!
